“Find the Scottie”

Yesterday, it was nice and warm and today, we have a blizzard outside.  Once again, we have a perfect example of crazy Colorado weather and while we Scotties were digging holes outside 24 hours ago, now we are plowing paths around the backyard.

It’s easy to spot Sadie with her coal black haircoat as she runs back and forth through the snow, but you can hardly see us wheaten-colored Scotties, as we pretty much blend in with our snowy surroundings.  Wen likes to keep track of us as we cruise around the yard and now she gets to play “Find the Scottie” when we’re playing in the snow.  Her eagle eyes seem to be up to the challenge though, since they have had lots of practice over the years and they have basically turned into professional Scottie spotters!

“Find the Scottie”

Wishing on a Star

“Star light star bright, first star I see tonight.  I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.”

Whoa, what happened?  It just got really dark!  This is getting kind of cre-e-e-e-py!

What is this, the Twilight Zone?  Okay, I wish that I were somewhere else instead of here, wishing on a star!

One of These Days….

The other day, I sort of got myself in trouble out in the backyard.  My sister, Sadie, is always on a quest to find landscaping bark to chew on and she sneaked into a fenced off flower bed that Wen had barricaded on the sides to keep us Scotties from getting in there.  I followed Sadie through a barricade into the flower bed and as she grabbed a piece of bark and escaped back out, I realized that I was in trouble.

Sadie is a smaller dog than I am and unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way over or through either of the barricades of the fenced area, so I got stuck there.

Wen called us Scotties inside, but only the three girls showed up, so when she looked out the patio door to see where I was, she saw that I was trapped in the flower bed and she came out to rescue me.

I guess that I looked pretty forlorn sitting behind the fence as if I was incarcerated, because she ran over to me, lifted me over the fence, and carried me back inside the house. Maybe one of these days I’ll learn to mind my own business and not follow Sadie on her escapades, but evidently, it hasn’t happened yet!

I Think I’m Ready….

Okay, today is not my favorite kind of weather day.  It’s bitter cold, there’s a slick layer of frozen drizzle, and now it’s snowing.  In general, being outside today is like being on an ice skating rink with no skates necessary.

I plan to settle down in front of the fireplace, but I know that I’ll have to go outside soon, so I’m going to prepare and dress warmer than usual.  I think I’m ready….

Our Groom Day Routine

Every time that we Scotties have a grooming appointment, we follow a certain routine.  Wen brushes our teeth and then brushes out each one of us to get rid of any tangles in our haircoats and then she loads us into crates in the car.  After kind of a long drive, she drops us off at Gigi’s Groom & Board, where we spend a few hours being bathed, trimmed, and transformed into squeaky clean good-looking Scotties.

Later on, Wen arrives to pick us up and we go straight home, where after our evening meal, all four of us can hardly keep our eyes open.  The flurry of activities of the day seems to completely tire us out.  After all, it takes a lot of energy to go through our groom day routine and become good-looking once again!

Sunny’s Con Game

My sister, Sunny, has developed a habit.  Whenever she wants to go outside, she starts to whimper and her whimpering becomes louder and more intense until Wen opens the patio door.

Sunny knows that the Milkbone treat jar is on the counter next to the door and she also knows that Wen sometimes gives us all a treat when we come back inside.

Most of the time, Sunny really needs to go outside, but recently she has whimpered to go outside, made a u-turn on the deck, and come right back inside to stand next to where the treat jar is.  In other words, she doesn’t have to go outside—she just wants a treat.

Sunny’s con game worked well a few times until there was a glitch:  Wen caught on to her plan and she now stands at the door to make sure that Sunny actually goes outside on the grass.

Nice try though, Sunny.  Your con game paid off for all of us Scotties for a little while!

Sunny: I want a treat!

Perching

We Scotties spend most of our quality couch time perched on throw pillows or on the arm of the couch.  Maybe it’s because we seek out what we consider to be the cushiest spot or being short dogs, we want to elevate ourselves to feel taller, but we are practically professional pillow perchers and arm occupiers.

Years ago, Wen’s first wheaten Scottie, Poo, used to perch on the back of the couch and look out the picture window behind her to watch what was happening in the backyard. She would sometimes lie down and drape herself over the back of the couch and if someone sat on the couch while she was up there, they might feel a few inquiring sniffs from Poo’s nose.

Perhaps, we like sitting or lying up higher because we know we have a better view of what’s going on around us.  Whatever the reason, we’ll continue to enjoy our perching.  We know how to make ouselves at home and comfortable!

Glasses

People seem to think that wearing glasses makes you look intelligent.

Do these glasses make me look intelligent?

Maybe so, but dogs don’t need glasses to make them look smart. We were born smart!

I Should Have Known Better.

Sometimes, you see something interesting out of the corner of your eye.  You have to go investigate to check it out and you find that what looked so intriguing turns out to be not what you thought it was.

The other day, I noticed that there was a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows sitting on an end table in the living room.  Hmmm, what was that doing there?  When I went over and gave it a sniff, it turned out to be a plush dog toy instead of a tasty drink.

Oh, well, I should have known better, because Wen wouldn’t have left an unguarded cup of hot chocolate within reach of four nosey Scotties. Maybe I didn’t get a few laps of hot chocolate that day, but I did end up grabbing a new dog toy to chew up!

An Anatomical Oops!

One of Wen’s favorite Christmas presents is a colorful blanket with a giant picture of a wheaten Scottie on it.  Unfortunately, although the Scottie’s image on the blanket is an incredible reproduction of an awesome original painting, it has a couple of flaws.  The manufacturer evidently over enlarged the image before transferring it to the fabric, because the Scottie’s nose and rear legs are cut off.

It’s such a shame, because the blanket is still fabulous—it just has an anatomical oops!
