This Was Not Our Fault!

Over the years there have been lots of oops situations at our house.  Yes, there have been lapses in dog judgments which have left puddles and piles for Wen to discover and have to clean up.  Some of the oops situations can be attributed to little puppies who weren’t quite up to speed in their house training or older dogs with bladder cancer, but some of them have honestly just been due to someone being lazy and not waiting to go outside.

Recently, a large pile appeared on our living room floor and it was plushy, it didn’t smell, and it even had a face!  This particular pile was definitely not a dog transgression.  This was not our fault!  Ha ha, very funny.

Whoa! We Got Snow!

It didn’t look too bad when it started to snow, but then it kept on snowing.  By the next morning, we Scotties were surprised at the effort it took to plow trails around our backyard through the deep snow.  Whoa!  We got some serious snow!  It turned out that we hadn’t had this much accumulation since 2016.

After awhile, we Scotties ended up inside by the fireplace, but Wen stayed outside and worked on a project.  Before long, she had created something even better than a snowman–a snow Scottie!  The snow was dry and fluffy and didn’t stick very well, but she kept working until she made a life-sized snow Scottie and to make it look even more authentic, she put a dog collar around its neck.  Who would have thought that some of that snow in our backyard would become an art project!

A Sign for Sunny

When you see something perfect, you have to bring it home.  That’s what Wen thought the other day when she came upon a sign that had Sunny’s name on it and since Sunny just turned thirteen, we all want many many more Sunny days in our future!

The Scottie Bed

What is the most popular spot in our house on a cold winter day?  It has to be the dog bed that is on the floor in front of the fireplace.  Two of us Scotties can fit on the bed at one time and that works out perfectly, since Sadie and I are the only two who are really interested in staking out a claim on the bed.  Sunny and Molly both tried out the bed once or twice, but they decided that they preferred to lie on the couch instead.  That’s just fine with us though, because if the fireplace is on, either Sadie or I or both of us can be found on the bed, soaking up the heat from the fireplace until we are toasty warm.

Wen had never bought a dog bed before, since we Scotties notoriously shred plush toys and crate pads and she figured that a dog bed would be a giant chew fest for us and a waste of money.  That was until she came across a dog bed that was made from fabric with Scotties all over it and it was as so cute that she couldn’t leave the store without it.

After she positioned the bed right by the fireplace, it wasn’t long before it was occupied and it has been occupied ever since.  Miracle of miracles, not one of us Scotties has chewed on the bed and it is still in perfect condition two months later!  It seems that we Scotties like the comfy Scottie bed and so far, it’s surviving just fine.  Who knows, maybe it will even last all the way until spring!

Happy Birthday, Sunny!

Today is a very special day at our house!  It is my sister, Sunny’s birthday and she is thirteen years old today!  Yes, the queen of our little Scottie family is now officially a teenager.  We are all thrilled to celebrate Sunny’s big milestone birthday and we wish her many more.

Happy Birthday, Sunny, the fearless leader of our Scottie clan!  You go, girl!

Silly Scottie Entertainment

Our little family of Scotties includes one of us who can be a real goof.  She rolls her eyes, makes silly faces, and clowns around.  She is our youngest and smallest family member, but she makes up for it in other ways with her big personality.  Who is the loudest shrillest barker?   Yes, I’m talking about Sadie!

That little Scottie never lacks for attention, because she is constantly pawing at Wen to be petted and she likes to dart around and taunt the rest of us Scotties until we finally pay attention to her and play her cat and mouse chase game.  Sadie is pretty much the low man on the totempole, but she has a way of making sure that you notice her and without her clowning around here, we wouldn’t have nearly as much silly Scottie entertainment!

Silly Spider Toy

What happens when four dogs are introduced to a new toy that moves across the floor?  All of us are definitely curious.  What happens when the toy moves really fast and it travels in crazy patterns?  A frantic chase ensues!

The other day, Wen placed a fuzzy spider toy on our living room floor and not only did the spider’s legs wiggle, but it zoomed across the floor.  All four of us Scotties immediately sprang into action and the chase was on!  The spider circled around, hit the wall, and kept on moving faster and faster until all of us were trying to grab it.  We finally trapped it and I picked it up with my teeth and took out running with my sisters close behind me.  Wen must have feared for the spider toy’s life, because she took it away from me and set it on the kitchen counter.  A few minutes later, when she put the toy on the floor again and it took off, we Scotties were back on the chase and when I snatched it up again, all of a sudden it was back on the kitchen counter.

We had a good time with the toy and we got more riled up with each frantic chase, until the spider remained hidden from us avid spider toy hunters.  That didn’t stop me from keeping watch for the spider’s return though and I stood guard in the living room, just in case it showed up.  No silly spider toy was going to sneak past me!

Just One Look

Back in the day, wheaten Scotties were rare and Wen had only seen pictures of them in books.  That’s why she was so excited to come across a wheaten female puppy in the Dallas area in 1980.  After confirming that the puppy was definitely a Scottie and not a Westie, she convinced her husband to take a look at the puppy and that’s all it took–just one look–and they took the puppy home.

That was the beginning of Wen’s passion for wheaten Scotties, which has only become stronger through the years, to the point where she has now had seven wheatens to two blacks, one brindle, and one black brindle.  From the first wheaten puppy, I guess that we wheaten sweeties have stolen her heart!  Thank goodness for that just one look!

Pooey

Wen was a veterinary technician for (literally) decades.  One thing that always bothered her was when people named their dogs “Pooh Bear” and for some reason, it just grated on her when she heard that name.  When she and her husband got their first wheaten Scottie puppy, a female whom they named “Frosty,” out of the blue, Wen started calling her “Poo,” which soon evolved into “Little Poo” and “Pooey.”

To Wen, the name “Poo”  seemed entirely different than “Pooh Bear” and the name immediately stuck.  Frosty lived eleven years and not once was she ever called “Pooh Bear,” but more often than not, she was “Pooey,” rather than “Frosty.”  How ironic that Wen chose to call her beloved first wheaten puppy a name that was so similar to the name she despised, but to her, the names were as different as night and day.  Go figure!
